🔧 RV Awning Guide

The most important factors to consider with RV awnings are weather sensitivity, fabric durability, type of operation, and maintenance. Awnings act like giant sails and can easily tear, bend, or pull out of the RV wall if not managed properly. Key factors to keep in mind:
  • Wind & Weather Sensitivity: Never leave an awning extended unattended. High winds (above 15–20 mph) can easily destroy the frame or fabric. Always retract your awning when leaving the campsite or going to bed.
  • Rain Management: Heavy water pooling will stretch or snap the fabric. To mitigate this, lower one arm so rain can run off, known as the "dump feature," but still close it during severe storms.
  • Manual vs. Power Operation: Manual awnings offer more control, allowing you to easily adjust the pitch and height, and require no electrical wiring. Power (motorized) awnings deploy at the push of a button for quick convenience but come with a higher risk of motor failure or deployment during transit.
  • Fabric Choice (Acrylic vs. Vinyl): Acrylic is woven, breathable, and dries quickly. It repels water but isn't entirely waterproof. Vinyl is heavier (13-oz to 16-oz is ideal), highly durable, and waterproof, but must be completely dried before rolling up to prevent mildew.
  • Routine Upkeep: Awnings require regular cleaning. Hose off debris every few months and scrub gently with mild soap and a soft brush — never use bleach, abrasive cleaners, or pressure washers.
