❓ Frequently Asked Generator Questions

Is it practical to run the air conditioner with my generator while driving?

Yes — that's what generators are for: portable electrical power. It can help save on vehicle gas since generators use less fuel, and it gives the generator a chance to exercise. Any appliance that runs while parked can also run while driving.

Can I run my generator for extra power while hooked up to shore power?

Only if the RV manufacturer has supplied a separate circuit for a second air conditioner. If your motorhome has two A/C units, typically only one will operate while plugged into commercial shore power, since the electrical systems are designed to separate the two power sources — though some manufacturers wire for both. Check your owner's manual.

Will speeding up (accelerating the RPM of) my generator provide more power?

Generally not, and it may damage your generator and appliances.

What is carburetor icing?

Carburetor icing occurs in very damp, cool outside conditions. It causes rough operation, stalling, and throttle sticking.

How often does a generator need maintenance?

Check your owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule.

Should I change the oil before storing my generator for a while?

Yes — like your motor, change the oil for seasonal temperature changes. For longer RV storage, check your operator's manual for specific guidance.

Once I start the generator, should I keep it running for a minimum amount of time?

Most generators should run for about 30 minutes to give them a chance to warm up. Once warmed up, running for shorter periods is fine. Check your operator's manual for specific instructions.

Do diesel generators need to be exercised like gas generators?

Yes — running them periodically helps lubricate all the seals and engine components.
