🗺️ Land you will run into

State forest land

The DNR page does not give a day limit or distance from roads or water; check state forest rules or call a local DNR office. The 15-night maximum it mentions applies to state forest campgrounds in peak season.

National forests

Huron-Manistee, Hiawatha and Ottawa each publish their own rules. Huron-Manistee allows dispersed camping almost anywhere unless posted closed, and lets you gather firewood without a permit.

✅ Also plan around

  • Fire: Check fire restrictions, do not build a fire in hazardous, dry conditions and extinguish it completely.

Hazards: Mosquitoes and ticks, soft sandy roads, and fast weather changes near the Great Lakes. Check the National Weather Service for current forecasts.
