The short version

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore runs along Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It has three drive-in campgrounds open May 15 to Oct. 15, all at $25 a night, all without water, sewer or electric hookups, and all reservation-only through Recreation.gov up to six months ahead.

The NPS gives size guidance for each campground: single vehicles up to 36 feet and combinations up to 42 feet. Little Beaver Lake prohibits anything longer. For hookups, the closest option listed by the NPS is Muskallonge Lake State Park, and rustic Michigan state forest campgrounds are available first come, first served.

  • Lake Superior beaches, cliffs and forest
  • Self-contained rigs up to 36 ft (42 ft combined)
  • Travelers who can reserve early

Think twice if

  • You want to drop in without a reservation. There is no drop-in camping at Pictured Rocks
  • You need hookups. Only Muskallonge Lake State Park is listed with electric
  • You need a dump station in the park. None is listed

  • Little Beaver Lake: single units over 36 ft and combinations over 42 ft prohibited
  • Twelvemile Beach and Hurricane River: recommend 36 ft / 42 ft because of limited turning radius
