Boondocking in Utah

Red rock dispersed camping, with clear BLM rules on sites, routes and fire.

A planning guide, not a campsite directory. We have not verified individual campsites. This page summarizes what land managers publish; your exact location and dates decide what is allowed. Last checked October 15, 2026.

Utah has some of the most camped public land in the West around Moab, St. George and the San Rafael Swell. BLM Utah publishes unusually specific rules, and national parks such as Zion and Arches are not dispersed camping areas.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Land you will run into

BLM land

Most dispersed RV camping happens on BLM land. Field offices add local rules, and popular areas near Moab have developed campgrounds and designated-site requirements. Ask the Moab, St. George, Richfield or other responsible field office about your exact area.

State trust lands (SITLA)

The Utah Trust Lands Administration lists camping under "Trust Lands & You", but we could not retrieve its rules. Do not assume trust land is open for camping: check the agency before staying.

National parks and forests

National parks are not dispersed camping areas. Utah national forests publish their own travel maps and rules.

βœ… Also plan around

  • Trash: Pack out all trash.
  • Waste: Plan to dump at an authorized station.
  • Access: Check road surface and clearance. Many dirt roads become impassable when wet.

Hazards: Summer heat, flash floods in canyons and washes, and clay roads that turn to mud when wet. Leave while the road is still passable. Check the National Weather Service for current forecasts.
