Rocky Mountain and San Luis Valley RV trip guide

Two very different national parks in one state: high alpine roads and a timed-entry system in the north, a dunes-and-creek campground in the San Luis Valley. Know which roads your rig can use and when the campgrounds close.

Best months: Late May–September (Rocky Mountain); April–June (Medano Creek)Rules checked October 14, 2026How to use this guide

The short version

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is the Colorado park most RV travelers picture: Trail Ridge Road, Bear Lake, elk in Moraine Park. It also runs a timed-entry system in the busy season, closes most campgrounds in late September and early October, and bars trailers from Old Fall River Road. Plan the dates and roads first.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, about a day south in the San Luis Valley, is a quieter second stop. Its Piñon Flats Campground has no hookups, and Medano Creek, the seasonal stream at the base of the dunes, flows in spring and early summer. Together they make a good Colorado loop for a self-contained rig.

Best for

  • Alpine scenery, elk and short hikes from a base camp
  • Self-contained rigs that can camp without hookups
  • Travelers who can book ahead and plan around timed entry

Think twice if

  • You need full hookups in the park. RMNP electric sites are limited to two loops and no campground has water hookups
  • You plan to tow a trailer on Old Fall River Road, which is closed to trailers
  • You want a spontaneous summer day trip with no reservations

Rig fit

  • Old Fall River Road bars vehicles over 25 ft and any vehicle pulling a trailer
  • RMNP electric sites are on Moraine Park Loops B and C only
  • Colorado’s Traction Law can apply on mountain roads in winter conditions

Rig check: roads and campgrounds

RMNP’s main roads are paved, but the gravel and high-elevation ones have firm limits.

Old Fall River Road
Closed to vehicles over 25 feet and to any vehicle pulling a trailer, including tow vehicles. Gravel, one way uphill, 15 mph, no guardrails. Typically open from early July to early October.
Bear Lake Road

Trail Ridge Road

Traction Law
Colorado’s Vehicle Traction Law applies when posted: tires need at least 3/16 inch of tread, or you need a traction device.
Great Sand Dunes campground
Most Piñon Flats RV sites take rigs up to 25 feet. A few in Loops 1 and 2 (sites 8, 39, 47, 60, 76, 77, 80 and 86) take up to 35 feet. Generator hours are set by the park.

When to go

Itineraries that work with a rig

These plans use one base per park and keep the rig off roads it can’t use.

3 days: RMNP highlights

First visit with a timed-entry reservation.

  1. Day 1, settle in. Arrive early, set up at Moraine Park and check the road status line.
  2. Day 2, Trail Ridge Road. Drive the high road across the park. Check weather first.
  3. Day 3, Bear Lake Road. Use the Bear Lake corridor permit if you plan to go in the busy season, then walk short trails.

5 days: Add the dunes

A longer Colorado loop.

  1. Days 1–3. Follow the three-day plan.
  2. Day 4, drive south. Head to the San Luis Valley and set up at Piñon Flats.
  3. Day 5, dunes and creek. Walk the dunes early, before the sand heats up, and wade Medano Creek in spring.

7 days: Slow week

Spare days for weather.

  1. Days 1–5. Follow the five-day plan.
  2. Day 6, tow car drive. If your rig is under 25 feet and not towing, consider Old Fall River Road in season.
  3. Day 7, buffer. Keep a day for storms or closures.
