White Sands and southern New Mexico RV trip guide

White Sands has no camping for RVs, so the plan is a base camp nearby. Oliver Lee State Park has water-and-electric sites, but its entrance is under construction through December 2026.

The short version

White Sands National Park does not offer overnight camping for RVs or vehicles. The park page names three alternatives: Oliver Lee State Park about 24 miles southeast, Aguirre Springs Recreation Area about 39 miles southwest, and Lincoln National Forest campgrounds about 40 miles east in the Sacramento Mountains, mainly open in summer.

Oliver Lee has 15 water-and-electric (30 amp) sites, one 50-amp ADA site and 24 developed dry sites. The park is open during entrance construction expected to last through December 2026, and its dump station is closed during that work.

Best for

  • A short dunes trip from a state-park base
  • Shoulder-season travel
  • Rigs that can handle a 24-mile day drive

Think twice if

  • You want to sleep inside White Sands with your rig. The park does not allow it
  • You cannot tolerate a closure. Missile testing can close the park or Highway 70
  • You need an on-site dump station before December 2026. Oliver Lee’s is closed during construction

Rig fit

  • Oliver Lee: 30-amp water-and-electric sites; one 50-amp ADA site; maximum lengths not listed
  • Dunes Drive: the first four miles are a no-slowing, no-stopping safety corridor
  • Check for Highway 70 closures before you tow
